Wake up, Jane Austen fans! Our time is here again. One of the latest Jane Austen retellings/adaptations has finally gotten a release date. But this isn’t Pride and Prejudice or another Persuasion or Emma adaptation. The newest Austenesque series to hit our eyeballs will be The Other Bennet Sister.
This series is based on the novel of the same name by Janice Hadlow and follows the often-forgotten-about Miss Mary Bennet. As someone who has read this book and has been waiting for a good Mary Bennet-focused book and/or movie, I could not be more excited for this.
Don’t get me wrong: I will be an Elizabeth Bennet fan until the day I die, but Mary Bennet has her own very relatable qualities, and she has been cast aside for too long.
But what is this new show about? The story begins where Pride and Prejudice does: in Longbourn, the Bennet family home. We will get to see all the sisters, but instead of romance and wit, Mary is focused on a completely different path. And she will not be staying at home for long. We will see her traveling to London to live with her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner.
The Other Bennet Sister starts streaming on May 6
While there, she discovers who she really is, outside of her sisters’ shadows. We will still get to see some of the well-known settings from Pride and Prejudice, but from a different perspective. And from what I remember from the book, don’t worry. Mary will still get some romance as well.
The new series stars Ella Bruccoleri as Mary Bennet alongside Ruth Jones, Richard E. Grant, Indira Varma, Richard Doyle, Tanya Reynolds, Dónal Finn, Varada Sethu, and Laurie Davidson. Maddie Close, Poppy Gilbert, Molly Wright, and Grace Hogg-Robinson will play Jane, Lizzie, Kitty, and Lydia Bennet, respectively.
The show will feature ten 30-minute episodes and will be available to stream on BritBox in the US and on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the UK starting on May 6, 2026.
