Putting your own take on a classic story can be tough. However, Rebecca F. Kenney is making it look easy especially with Ruthless Devotion.
Published by Sourcebooks Casablanca, Kenney has been releasing her Gilded Monsters series. Each book has been a remix on beloved classic stories including The Great Gatsby and The Picture of Dorian Gray.
This time, Kenney is taking on the classic tale of tragic love and longing with Wuthering Heights. If you’ve read the previous books, then you’ll know each of these books features a supernatural twist. I won’t spoil the first two books.
However, I will say that this book has me so excited for what’s next and I think Kenney is only getting better as a writer. With that being said, I’d like to thank Sourcebooks Casablanca for sending me an ARC.
Ruthless Devotion takes Wuthering Heights to a new level.
For my fellow Wuthering Heights fans, this new take by Rebecca F. Kenney feels like a breath of fresh air. As previously mentioned, there is a supernatural element to this one as Cathy is a banshee. She can sense death and it ends up being almost a trancelike state for her. At times, it’s truly hard to read about what’s going through.
Then there’s Heathcliff who is a necromancer. The two end up meeting and from the very first moment, it’s clear the attraction is there. However with Cathy having a protective father and no money of her own, things seem unlikely for the two. As with the classic story, these two end up having those stolen moments when they can.
While the book does focus a lot on their romance, the larger plotline from the previous two books comes into play as well. While I don’t want to give too much away, there is a moment where we get to see the characters from the previous books and it’s great.
Ultimately, Ruthless Devotion is an ode to Wuthering Heights with plenty of spice, action and questions to keep you guessing. Thankfully, we do know that the next book is Cruel Angel which is a Phantom of the Opera remix with a throuple which sounds delightful. If you’re craving something unique while also paying homage to a classic story, you can’t go wrong with Ruthless Devotion.
