December is here and everyone knows it’s time for cookie baking. Whether you’ve joined in on the Bakemas trend on TikTok or just want some new recipes to try, New York Times dropped some for Cookie Week.
Taking place from December 1st to December 7th, Cookie Week is a chance for some of our favorite bakers to share their recipes. This year, the theme for Cookie Week was iconic drinks, snacks and treats.
Honestly as soon as I heard the theme, I was incredibly excited and even more so when I heard the bakers who were participating. Let’s just say that Claire Saffitz is the baker who always calls to me as I’ve enjoyed her content on BA and now, her Dessert Person videos on YouTube.
This year’s mix of cookie recipes were interesting to put it mildly. With that being said, I wanted to share the recipes and if they’ll be featured among my holiday cookie baking this year.
Starting things off is the Popcorn Bucket Cookies from Vaughn Vreeland. If I had to describe this cookie, it feels like a “Choose Your Own Adventure” cookie in the best way. While the cookie recipe is pretty basic, the mix-ins and topping take it over the edge. You get to use your favorite movie snacks and some popcorn to make a sweet and salty cookie. This is one I definitely plan on trying after watching Vaughn make them.
The next cookie are the Mortadella Cookies by Claire Saffitz. As a huge fan of Claire, I was understandably skeptical of this one. While the cookie does have a unique look, it’s not one I’d personally make. Most notably, it contains nuts and as someone allergic to nuts, this one wouldn’t work regardless. However, Claire does an excellent job in her video as always so make sure to give it a watch.
Next up is Coconut Cake Snowballs. These are a pretty simple recipe but also classic. Once again, this would be a skip for me as I don’t love coconut but Samantha Seneviratne did a good job. Another option that might not appeal to everyone is the Mint Chocolate Chip Cookies by Eric Kim. Once again, I’m not a fan of Mint Chocolate Chip but if you do enjoy that flavor, then you’re sure to enjoy these cookies.
Moving onto a cookie I’m absolutely adding to my list, Sue Li gave us the Peanut Brown-Butter Cookies. Given that the inspiration is a Payday Bar, what’s not to like? For those wanting an alternative to the regular Christmas cookies, why not go with Melissa Clark’s Vietnamese Coffee Swirl Brownies? I feel like these would be great for the coffee lover in your life and feel like the ultimate non-cookie treat.
Last but not least, the final cookie is from Dan Pelosi. He made Dark ‘n’ Stormy Cookies which are based on the drink of the same name. These would be ideal for a Christmas party with friends or those who are wanting a more uniquely flavored cookie this year. Of course, you can always head to New York Times Cooking for tons of great cookie recipes to give your holiday cookie box that extra special something.
